Regional network meetings were held in London, Birmingham and Leeds on 27th, 29th and 30th April 2009 for teacher educators and mentors involved in the planning and delivery of Strand 2 Diploma experience for trainees. The Strand 2 programme enables some initial teacher trainees to obtain two weeks' experience of Diploma teaching and learning which is additional to the route to Qualified Teacher Status that the trainee is undertaking. The meetings - which were attended by provider, school and Local Authority representatives - enabled delegates to gain insight into the Strand 2 process, share good practice and plan for future provision.

The meetings included presentations from Training School and provider colleagues on the Diploma process in addition to group discussions of key issues associated with the Strand 2 experience.

In London:

Ms Wendy Bisiker, from Deptford Green School, gave a presentation on how the school is preparing for the introduction of the Diploma

Mr Dean Hackett, representing the University of Brighton, spoke about the structure of the Strand 2 experience for Brighton trainees.

In Birmingham:

Dr Neil Wood introduced delegates in Birmingham to Diploma teaching at Windsor School

Ms Barbara Woods and Ms Ronnie Ward, from Sir Bernard Lovell School, focused on Diploma teaching and forging links with industry partners

Mr Vic Cotterill, representing Wolverhampton University, presented the provider perspective on experience in the Engineering Diploma

In Leeds:

Mr Karl Elwell from Huntington School presented a regional overview of Diploma planning and delivery
Mr Mike Fergus from Dixons City Academy spoke about working within a consortium to develop effective partnership

Ms Louise Quinn and Ms Rowena Smith of Manchester Metropolitan University guided delegates through the Strand 2 programme at the provider

The Department for Children, Schools and Families was represented by Professor Kate Myers at the London and Birmingham events who gave an informative and thought provoking presentation on gender equality issues in the new Diploma.  Colleagues interested in this area will be interested in the recent DCSF 'Gender Agenda' resources available on TTRB

Chris Thompstone from the TDA informed delegates at all events about the ongoing work to improve Information, Advice and Guidance.

Delegates at all three events were given the opportunity to discuss the planning and delivery of the Diploma experience for trainees through structured sessions focussing on key questions. Details of the questions, together with notes from the events and copies of the presentations given are also available as downloads below.
