This report from Ofsted is drawn from evidence garnered chiefly during inspections between 2005 and 2008 from mainstream schools including 84 primary schools and 95 secondary schools. The report is structured into two sections; the first section (Part A) centres on inspection findings, and the second part (Part B) outlines what it sees as
"the essential components of effective teaching in music". Both Part A and Part B of the report include illustrative case studies.
The report serves two purposes, to summarise inspection findings and to offer constructive advice which can build on strengths and address the weaknesses. It is disappointing that many of these weaknesses are ones which have been raised time and time again. This report concludes that "Overall, there has been insufficient improvement over the last three years" (Executive Summary). It seems important to consider how it can be ensured that the same findings do not come out of the next report in three years' time.
