This briefing has been written to provide trainees in initial teacher training (ITT) with an introduction to careers education and IAG, and some suggestions for how to find out more about these inter-related aspects of schools' work in practice. It replaces the April 2005 briefing on careers education and guidance and work-related learning.
Why do trainee teachers need to know about Careers Education and IAG?
Secondary schools have statutory duties to provide:
- all young people in Years 7 to 11 with a programme of impartial careers education in the curriculum
- all young people with impartial careers information and access to careers guidance.
Newly qualified secondary school teachers are likely to contribute to careers education and information, advice and guidance (IAG) in their roles as a subject teacher and/or as a tutor.
The briefing is attached below. This will also be linked to from the TDA Q15 guidance.
