KS3 Modern Foreign Languages - ICT and MFL

ICT and MFL (Teachers' TV)

The purpose of this Teachers TV programme is to demonstrate how ICT can be used to enhance MFL teaching and learning. The main focus is on a Year 7 lesson, where pupils are engaged in a range of activities in what is described as a “state of the art language laboratory”. This is interspersed with comment from the Language Teacher Adviser (ICT) from CILT, who advises that teachers inexperienced with ICT should ‘start simple’. Certainly, there is little in the programme which should worry the novice in ICT, although much will depend on the resources available within the individual school.

It is demonstrated how pupils on different workstations can be paired up to complete dialogues; the teacher can monitor progress through a headset, and the dialogues can be played back to the rest of the class.  Pupils also individually complete a true/false listening exercise. The benefits of ICT are identified as flexibility, and providing opportunities for pupils to simultaneously listen, read, interact, and receive immediate feedback. The potential for real communication with speakers of the target language, as well as accessibility of authentic materials on the internet, are given as further advantages, although this is not explored in the programme. However, a range of very useful websites is identified which are linked to below.

This programme may provide useful stimulus material for trainees and tutors, especially if presented alongside other ICT/MFL materials. There are also other issues raised by the programme which would be worthy of discussion in this context:

  • The nature of the lesson ‘objectives’ as given to the pupils, and how these compare with the teacher’s explanation of intended learning outcomes to camera
  • Whether the programme demonstrates effectively the potential advantages of presenting vocabulary through the medium of ICT, and how this might differ from the use of other resources
  • How ICT can enhance the use of target language (teacher and pupils), and strategies necessary for this to happen
